Your Complete SIE Exam Day Walkthrough
You've studied for weeks. You know your bond yields, your AML thresholds, and your options breakevens. Now it's exam day. Here's exactly what happens so there are no surprises.
Before You Leave: The Checklist
Bring:
- Valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID with signature (driver's license, passport, or military ID)
- Your appointment confirmation (email or printed — not required but helpful)
Leave behind:
- Phone, smartwatch, and all electronics
- Notes, books, and study materials
- Food and drinks (not allowed in the testing room)
The name on your ID must exactly match the name on your FINRA enrollment. If they don't match, you will not be allowed to test, and you'll forfeit your $80 fee.
Arriving at the Testing Center
Arrive 30 minutes early. Late arrivals may be turned away. When you check in:
The proctor will verify your ID, take a digital photo, and in most centers, perform a palm-vein or fingerprint scan. You'll store all personal items in a locker — including your phone, wallet, watch, and any outerwear with large pockets. The center provides a dry-erase board and marker (or scratch paper) for notes during the exam. You'll also get noise-canceling headphones if you want them.
The Exam Environment
The testing room is a shared space with other test-takers (who may be taking completely different exams). Each person sits at an individual workstation with a computer and a privacy partition. The room is monitored by proctors and cameras.
Before the actual exam begins, you'll go through a short tutorial that shows you how the interface works — how to navigate between questions, flag questions for review, and submit your exam. This tutorial does not count against your 105-minute exam time.
During the Exam: 105 Minutes, 80 Questions
The clock starts when you begin the first question. Key things to know:
You can move freely between questions — skip ahead, go back, and change answers at any time before submitting. Use the "flag" feature to mark questions you want to revisit. A progress bar shows how many questions you've answered and how much time remains.
The 80 questions include 75 that count toward your score and 5 unscored pilot questions. You cannot tell which are which — they're mixed in randomly. Answer every question as if it counts, because you can't know which ones don't.
Time Management Strategy
| Milestone | Target |
|---|---|
| Questions 1-20 | Done by ~25 minutes |
| Questions 21-40 | Done by ~50 minutes |
| Questions 41-60 | Done by ~75 minutes |
| Questions 61-80 | Done by ~95 minutes |
| Review flagged questions | Final 10 minutes |
Most test-takers finish with 15-20 minutes to spare. If you've been taking timed practice exams, your pacing should already be solid.
Taking the Exam Online (Remote Proctoring)
FINRA also offers the SIE through Prometric's online proctored platform. The exam content is identical, but the environment is different:
- You need a private, enclosed room with a closed door
- A working webcam and microphone are required (the proctor watches you live)
- Your desk must be clear — no papers, books, or second monitors
- You cannot leave the camera's view during the exam
- You cannot talk to anyone or read questions aloud
If the proctor observes any rule violations, your exam can be terminated and your score voided. The online option is convenient, but the rules are strict.
After You Submit: Instant Results
When you click "Submit," the screen will display your result immediately:
You'll see a pass/fail status and a score breakdown by section. This tells you not only whether you passed, but exactly which areas were strong and which were weak. If you passed — congratulations, your SIE credit is valid for 4 years. If you didn't pass, the section breakdown tells you exactly where to focus for your retake.
A formal score report is available through your FINRA account (via the FINRA Entitlement Program) within a few business days.
The Day Before: Final Prep Checklist
Don't cram the night before. Instead:
- Do a light review of the SIE Cheat Sheet and Key Numbers
- Confirm your testing center location and appointment time
- Check that your ID matches your enrollment name exactly
- Lay out what you're wearing (comfortable, layered — testing rooms vary in temperature)
- Get 7-8 hours of sleep
If you've been consistently scoring 78%+ on practice exams, you're ready. Trust your preparation and go get it.
